At Gomersal Primary School, we believe that maths helps us to understand the world around us. On a simple, day-to-day level, maths allows us to organise our lives. We learn to tell the time, manage our finances, and measure ingredients to prepare a meal.
On a higher level, maths helps us to understand great breakthroughs in science; how to harness power from the sun, how computers actually work, how to create vaccines to save the world. It also allows us to make the world a more beautiful place; art and architecture, fashion and design, all rely on ratio, proportion and symmetry.
The cognitive demands of maths are valuable - the fact that there is challenge in understanding the principles of mathematics helps us to develop reasoning skills, logical thought and perseverance.
